Prescription for Hope by Carolyn Klaus, MD

“No one could understand the Esperanza story and remain an atheist!” a volunteer told Dr. Kraus. Such comments prompted her to record the remarkable events which she and her friends experienced as they struggled to open and maintain an inner-city health center. Her narrative will take you on a whitewater voyage from one miracle to another through a terrain of desperate needs–including her own. Along the way they learned important principles of the kingdom of God that apply to other ministries as well.

About the Author(s)

by Carolyn Klaus, MD

Carolyn Klaus, M.D., is a board-certified internist who became skilled in care of AIDS patients in a Philadelphia inner-city clinic that she founded. Her book Prescription for Hope describes those early days at Esperanza Health Center, which 26 years later still flourishes. With mentoring from an international agency, she also learned to do community development in that needy neighborhood. She has used this experience in seven AIDS-affected countries, teaching and consulting in medical schools, colleges and universities, churches, and community-based organizations on four continents.

In recent years she has concentrated her efforts in Ethiopia, facilitating the work of 16 denominations to develop a joint AIDS curriculum, training pastors and community leaders on AIDS, and spearheading spiritual and economic development training in several diverse cultural groups. When she is in the USA she enjoys crocheting, watching American football, and indulging her grandchildren.
